People in the southern states were angry that African Americans were getting new rights, so after Reconstruction, many southern states passed Jim Crow laws. These laws separated the two races and caused an unfair treatment of people, called discrimination. Jim Crow laws are also called Black Codes.
Soon it became very difficult for African Americans to vote or hold public office. These laws were meant to limit the opportunities of blacks. It was during this time period that anti-black groups such as the Ku Klux Klan had their start.
